日本ディベート協会では、今年もアメリカのNational Communication Association, Committee on International Discussion and Debateの協力のもと、「日米交歓ディベート全米代表日本ツアー」と開催することになりました。今回は２１世紀はじめという区切りの年のツアーにふさわしく、全米でトップレベルのディベーターとコーチを招聘できることとなったことは主催者としても大変喜ばしい限りです。お近くでイベント開催の折には、是非足をお運びいただきますようお願いいたします。

米国チーム・ツアー・コーチ

バーブ・ピッカーリング博士 (Dr. Barb Pickering)　

ピッカーリング博士は現在James Madison Universityのdirector of forensicsで、就任から３年間でNational Debate Tournament(NDT)に２度、Cross Examination Debate Association Tournament(CEDA)に１度チームを送っています。専門はpolitical communication, gender communication, argumentationです。

全米代表ディベーター

アン・マリー・トッド(Anne Marie Todd, Ms.)さん　

トッドさんは元Emory Universityディベーターで、１９９８年のCross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Tournamentの優勝ディベーターです。現在はUniversity of Southern California大学院の博士課程に在籍するかたわら、Urban Debate Leaguesやhigh school debate instituteでディベートの教育活動に従事し、Los AngelesのHarvard-Westlake Schoolでdirector of debateをなさっています。

アンディ・ピーターソン(Andy Peterson, Mr.)氏　

ピーターソンさんは現在University of Iowaのディベーターで２０００年のHarvard University大会の4th Speaker AwardやState University of West Georgia大会優勝など、これまで数多くのディベート大会ですばらしい成績を残しています。また2001年のNational Debate Tournamentで優勝しています。専攻はGlobal Studiesと中国語で、卒業後は中国に留学予定もあるようです。

イベント内容

公開ディベート

イベントは主に、大学生や社会人の日本人ディベーターと全米代表ディベーターによる公開ディベートが行われます。今回は以下の２つの論題が用意されており、その内の１つで試合が行われます。

1. Resolved: That Japan should amend its Constitution so as to allow the threat or use of force for settling international disputes. (2001年度前期JDA推薦論題)

2. Resolved:  That Japan should elect its Prime Minister directly by citizens’ vote.

コーチによる講演

公開ディベートとあわせてピッカーリング博士によるディベートや議論学に関する講演が行われます。テーマは現時点で確定ではありませんが、以下の２つのうちのどちらかが行われます。（ただしイベントによっては効果ディベートの内容についてのコメントのみの場合もあります。）

1. Role of argumentation and debate in the last US presidential election campaign.

前回のアメリカ大統領選挙のBush/Gore両候補の舌戦を議論学の立場から分析していただきます。その延長として日本の自民党総裁選挙にもふれていただき、行政の長の直接選挙における議論の役割について考えていきます。

2. Role of 'thinking' in debate: Revisiting the importance of Kritik in educational debate practices and its application to daily social discourse.

教育ディベートの一つの目標としてcritical thinking skill/attitudeの育成があげれれます。ここでは、「考える」という作業がディベートにおいていかに大切か、critical thinkingというものが我々の社会生活においていかに大切か、またディベート・プラクティスの中で、特にKritik議論との関連でどのように育成されていくか、その可能性についてお話していただきます。

このほか、全米代表チームは６月１７日のEast-West Debate Contestと２３日のThe Daily Yomiuri Debate Tournamentにジャッジとして参加します。

詳しい御経歴

Dr. Barb Pickering (Tour coach)

I competed in debate at the University of Nebraska from 1977-1980.  I had not debated prior to my college experience, so I did primarily novice and junior varsity tournaments. That was when I first met and worked with Prof. Thomas Hollihan. After I graduated in 1980, I taught high school in Nebraska for 8 years. During that time I worked with the debate and individual events team at 2 schools.  My students won a state championship in debate in 1987, and I had students qualify for the National High School tournament in debate, individual events and an event called student congress.  In 1988 I returned to school to work on my Ph.D. at the Univ. of Southern California. While I was attending graduate school I coached the USC debate team. I completed my coursework in 1991 (where I worked with Tom Hollihan again), and I completed my dissertation in 1992. In 1991 I took a job at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. I worked there for 7 years as the director of forensics, teaching argumentation, gender communication, political communication and public speaking. While I was at UNLV, I had numerous teams qualify for the National Debate Tournament.  I also coached a student who won 2nd place in Communication Analysis at the National Individual Events Tournament.  In 1998 I moved to James Madison University, where I have been the Director of Forensics. I have spent the past 3 years at James Madison teaching and coaching the debate team.  We qualified 2 times for the National Debate Tournament, and this year, although we didn't qualify for the NDT, I took 2 students to the Cross Examination Debate Association National tournament, where they qualified for the elimination debates and lost in the triple-octa final round of competition.

My interests lie in the area of gender communication, and how that affects women in the workplace and in politics.  Also, I find the world of politics fascinating (and sometimes frustrating!).  I will be teaching at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the fall, and I'll be teaching gender communication and argumentation, which I'm very much looking forward to.

Ms. Anne Marie Todd (Debater)

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Anne Marie attended Emory University, where she graduated cum laude and was co-champion of the 1998 Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament.  She has coached several first round teams in her tenure at the University of Southern California, where she received her masters, and is a PhD. candidate in Communication.  Anne Marie has taught debate at Urban Debate Leagues and high school debate institutes for eight years and is also currently the director of debate at Harvard-Westlake school in Los Angeles.

Mr. Andy Peterson (Debater)

Andy Peterson started debating at Ottumwa High School in Ottumwa, Iowa, as a freshman. At the University of Iowa he continued his debate career while pursuing a double major in Global Studies and Chinese. His career has included many speaker awards and final round appearances, culminating in winning the 2001 National Debate Tournament. Other notable finishes include 4th speaker at the 2000 Harvard University Tournament, winning the State Univ. of West Ga. tournament, and being named a first round at large applicant to the NDT for the fourth time in 2001. Next year he plans to spend a year in China studying his Chinese before heading off to law school. His interests include the NBA, cartoons (such as Dragonball Z), and good music.
