概要：SCOPE OF THE COURSE
This course is concerned with the processes by which reasons aregiven to justify acts, beliefs, attitudes, and values. Argumentationwill be examined as a method of interpreting and evaluating publicdebate, as an extension of logical and rhetorical techniques, and asa situationally bound practice. The first half of this course willemphasize the theoretical understanding of argument whereas thelatter will emphasize practice in argument construction.
教科書：REQUIRED READING
Each student should have a copy of Richard D. Rieke and Malcolm O.Sillars' Argumentation and Critical Decision Making. 3rd edition (NewYork: HarperCollins Publishers, 1993) from the instructor. The pricefor each copy is 3,200 yen. Required reading will be drawn fromthe text listed above, and handouts may be distributed in class fromtime to time. If a student is not in attendance at the time ofdistribution, it is his/her responsibility to obtain a copy fromanother class mate via use of the xerox machines.
